Can I ask to transform my Tax code if i dont have yet my national insurance number?
I began working in the UK end of August
I realized last week I was still on the pinch tax code. I called Inland revenue to change it, however they ask my National Insurance Number.
I dont have it yet ( I didnt identify I had to ASK for it, pass an interview, etc... at a jobcenter. My friend got it sent automatically! We arrived in UK same leisure, he received confirmation of his correct tax code + n.insurance number within his first two weeks of employment!)
Damned, i will show in it in two months they told me. But in two months i will be back to France ! (I come from France)
I am on almost 50% tax valuation!!! For 6 months work!
SO, do you know if i can ask:
- first, to change my tax code
- then at the end of my employement (in one month), a tax refund
without having to linger for my NIN ?
They didnt gave me one temporary.... Thing is, by the time they will send it to me in the uk, i ll be gone !
I m so sick!!! They owe me basically 2500 pounds!!!!
Thanks everyone
Other answers are not usual. You dont need an NI no to get a tax refund. Your tax records will be held under a temporary NI covey which is made up of your date of birth and sex. So, for example, if you were me, my temp NI number would be:
TN211050F
You difficulty to complete a form P86 which you can downlaod from www.hmrc.gov.uk. Send it to your tax office asking them to efflux a code number asap as you will sonn be returning home. If the code is not changed in interval, you download a form P85 from the saem website and send it with your P45 to your tax office once you adieu to the UK.
You call for NI number to get a "normal" tax code.
However, once you have a proper tax code you will get a refund from the tax function.

Claiming Tax Credit In US For UK National Insurance Contributions?
Sep 22, 2009 by boarder8464 | Posted in United States
I puke 4 months earlier this year doing an internship in the UK. I'm a tax accounting grad swotter in Texas and know my worldwide income is subject to US tax. I know the amount the UK withheld as an proceeds tax is available as a tax credit in the US but wanted to know if the national insurance contributions can also be used as a assign? IRC code section or Treasury Regulation citations would be appreciated. Thanks!
Nope.
National Insurance is the close of the paying fica/mc in the US.
Since the USA has a totalization agreement with the UK, there is no deduction. (If you get crippled or retire and are short some SSA credits to retire, the time in the UK is considered.)
Here's the rub. What visa were you on? I ask because a UK admirer doing an intership on an F-1 visa wouldn't have had to pay fica/mc and if they did could file for a refund.
Here's the account from the Inland revenue site:
Coming to the UK from Social Security Concordat Countries
There are special rules if you are coming to the UK from:
Barbados, Bermuda, Canada, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Jersey and Guernsey, Korea, Mauritius, Philippines, Turkey, Collective States of America, Yugoslavia (not including Slovenia).
If you come to the UK with a certificate from one of these countries showing that you are exempt under the devoted rules, you will be exempt from National Insurance until the certificate expires. These certificates are normally issued where a myself works in one country and then is sent by their foreign employer to work in the UK for a beforehand.
The country where you are normally work will advise you whether you can be issued with a certificate.
If you do not clasp a certificate from your home country, you will be required to register for a National Insurance number and pay National Insurance contributions on the same underpinning as a person who normally lives and works here.
