I went to a site and they quoted 3000 pounds a year... that's more than the car is usefulness and more than the car has been worth for a long time.

Assume to pay a lot, but certainly no more than £1,000 third party, fire & theft - try confused.com.

Car insurance for a new driver will always be dear. £1800 isn't far off the mark.
Try a price comparison site to find the cheapest quote but also get a quote from Direct Cortege as they don't allow comparison sites to quote their prices.
Sabre car insurance io managed to get mine for £845 and that was for a 1.2 litre car!
