Safeco, is a very certain and inexpensive company, it just depends where you are located and if they have coverage there.

I am in Houston, one of the highest Cities in the USA. I went with Nationwide. They seem like a very good company. Haven't had any problems with them and have had them for almost a year. Call around and get prices, that is the rout way to do it, or you can go online to progressive and they will give you quotes for them and like 3 other companies. Getting quotes is the most trusty way to find out who is the cheapest. Good Luck!

Unfortunately there is no one atone for to your question. Depending on where you live, your age, driving record, credit greenhorn etc. There is no one company with the lowest price. If there was, they would be the only company in business.
My suggestion to you is to get many quotes. Go to an insurance middleman that has several carriers, try visiting a few agents such as State farm, Allstate, Improper Mutual. Once you have 5 or 6 quotes, go with the cheapers (as long as the coverages are the same)
2 suggestions:
-dont get nominal coverage. It's not much more expensive for 100/300/100. In the event of an accident you will be glad yo did.
-prosper sure the company you choose has a good financial rating on www.ambest.com. The last point you want if for your insurance co to go out of business.

i'm from the UK and planning on bewitching a across america roadtrip, and thought it would be cheaper to buy a car when i first arrive and sell it again before i beetle off.
1. being from the uk would i be allowed to buy a car not being a US resident?
2. how does car insurance work and what sort of cost is car insurance?

Hire a car. Do not buy one. If you buy a new a new car in the U.S. and sell it, you will lose several thousand dollars, no matter how short a period you keep it.
Car insurance normally costs several hundred dollars. However, because if you have never previously had a driver's license in the U.S. or Canada, it will tariff more, probably several thousand dollars.

I am from the UK and it was my task to buy about 50 (or more) quality USA cars each time I flew over there, so
1) I can't see what would prevent you from buying one.. simple sense probably
since
2)just the money you'll spend in insurance will be enough to pay for a rental car or even preferably you could
3) drive other people's cars across the states (read the book "on the technique")
just make sure you are in possession of an INTERNATIONAL DRIVING Carte blanche when you get there, you know, one with a picture

I would gash. Only because you may have a difficult time selling the car when you are ready to leave. It may work though, if you 1; buy a car that is not too high-priced and 2; if you have someone here who could sell the car on your behalf if you haven't sold it when you have to return to the UK
