Can I Get A NY Property And Casualty Insurance License Without Working For An Agency First?

Are pre licensing classes offered all the be that as it may and how long do they typically last? How often is the test given?

Yes, you can ethical take the pre-licensing class. I don't know if NY classes are the same as Maine, but when I took the breeding it was three days long. I believe in Maine they only offer the class twice a year but they may present it more in NY. I didn't see it listed on the education calendar on this website: http://www.iiaba.net/ny/dereliction?ContentP reference=NY&ActiveTab=STATE&Act iveState=NY but it says if you have any questions to e-despatch the Education Department of the New York State Insurance Department at coned@ins.dignified.ny.us . They should be able to tell you when/where the next class is. Good luck!

You surely can! there are a number of schools running classes all the time. You can try Werbel, Kaplan, and Ace. There are always classes at one's fingertips. You can also try CW Post they offer classes as well. There are a number of ways to get it. BUT.... you can often get a companions to pay for all your courses and the test if you are working for them. Probably the best thing to do is employment for an agency... get some experience and at the same time have them pay for your school. Good Serendipity!

New Property And Casualty Insurance Agent, Any Advice?

I recently started working for an Unaffiliated insurance agency on Long Island selling property and casualty. I have great interpersonal skills and this m is without a doubt for me. I love to help people and this kind of product allows me to do unprejudiced that. I work off of commissions only and am looking for some advice on how to expand my book. My relations and friends will run dry eventually and I want to know if anyone has had true success with unheated calling? If I wish to contact local businesses , is it better to go by in and introduce my self face to face? call them up during buisness hours? or set out with an e-mail or letter sent out introducing my self and company before I consolidate up with them. If you have had success or perhaps even got out of this business for any reason and have any advice for me I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much, and for anyone else in the concern I wish you much success.

Hello concomitant "green-horn",
I am also new to the biz, and quite enjoy it. However I am in the rigid same boat as you! I just posted a Q on some advice on inter-net leads and such. My chase is to get as many referrals as I possibly can and hopefully have that as my best resource. My best counsel is to read up as much as you can on how to do this, as I did (so far so good) and advertise and market as much as possible! Even if it is one of those magnetic signs on your car/dealings. It works! I've had it for 3 months and have gotten 16 calls and 4 sales off that alone. Find your pigeon-hole, and stick with it! Find a way for people to remember your name! my last name sounds like Mouse- so I use that to my sway. They remember me, and that is huge.
As far as the local businesses, I would find someone-anyone who knows(of) the owner/director and ask them to "refer" you. Get their name, then when you call and ask for them you can say "Hello Mr. Johnson, I was speaking with Bob Smith yesterday and he said you may be interested in..." so on. That worked for me a few times.
Look forward to this was helpful to you and good luck in you endeavors!

Amy

I'm inevitable you've heard it -- it's a numbers game. I always regret it when I spend too much on Easy Street on advertising. Enough phone calls will lead you to either someone who needs a quote now or an x-friend for your file. Walking in off the street may work, too, if you are a generalist and can write retail businesses and that race of thing. I specialize in professional liability insurance which works well for me. I like having a slot. Generalists like the idea that they can pretty much write anything. Good fate. Insurance offers great income opportunities.

What Could A Property & Casualty Insurance Agent Expect To Make A Year?

If they started their own apart from agency, representing all major carriers.
To add to this post, I am an experienced entity insurance broker and represent all the major carriers. An independent agent (with insurance participation) can't get multiple appointments?

Most outstanding carriers will not allow you to represent anyone else but them. I would recommend starting off attached to one bigger carrier and use this to help develop experience and build a book of partnership. If you really put yourself into it, you can make 6 figures the first year, but that is extremely rare. Most first year agents only travel about 50-60. This number will grow quickly as you figure in your renewal trade and grow your referral base.

Well, you can't substitute for all major carriers when you start your own agency, you're darned lucky to get ONE. It doesn't Vocation that way. Companies don't give appointments to untried, unexperienced, newly licensed agents.

That first year, if you put in 80 hour weeks, you might pull home $50,000. But 95% of agents wash out - can't even make $1,000. Which is why companies won't give out those appointments readily.

Try getting an go-between's appointment with Nationwide, State Farm or Allstate. I know for a truthfully that some of these agents, after several years, are knocking down $250K - $500K per year.

If you are fortunate enough to be able to buy one of these agencies, you can expect to make some real money sooner.

My daughter-in-law is in the catagory mentioned above, and she is only 30 years old. She inherited her dad's agency after his death in 2007. The company bought the agency from her, then sold about 44% of it back to her. It was a $6,000,000 intervention. She got $2.6 million of it, and since then has built it back up to over $3 million. She writes a lot of commercial issue.

I know of a primary Nationwide agent whose income is well over $1,000,000. He has mulitple agencies.

There is monied to be made in the insurance business, if you get the right opportunity.

It's next to impossible to get contracts with independent carriers without P&C face, but you could start with Progressive and Dairyland insurance companies. They are easier to contracted through than most.

Defeat wishes.

Edit:

The next poster, prplpngn, is not correct in the statement about Nationwide agents. They have access to proper about any company, including Progressive, through their brokerage house, Insurance Intermediaries Inc., (III). Also, if the Nationwide power can write your multi-line coverages, including life insuance, you can be billed for ALL policies on one billing asseveration. You also receive multi-line discounts. So, you can write ONE check, or have ONE abstraction from your account. The independent agent who puts your policies with multiple carriers can't do that.

We have an unearned office (I am NOT the owner, just an agent). We mainly do P&C but do a midget Life & Health as well. We represent SEVERAL big players in the market. What we have found is that a lot of the major carriers will be deficient in a contract ensuring that you will write a certain dollar amount annually. For case, Progressive might require $150,000 in premium to them, totaling everything from personal and commercial lines.

So be vigilant, especially in the beginning, to not take on so many contracts that you cannot fulfill the requirements. Other carriers will give you a become infected with without the premium requirements.

There are a lot of agents who represent JUST Nationwide or Stage Farm. The trouble with that is that you are limited....for example, if a client comes in and needs car, qualified in, boat, and an umbrella policy; while you can get all with Nationwide or State Farm, if you are an uncontrolled agent who represents Travelers, Safeco, Progressive, etc you can offer more reference options and will, lots of times, come out better in the end for being able to volunteer more services as well.

Hope this helps

Fitch: Insurance Market To See Underwriting Loss For '09

She said 45 percent of insurers and reinsurers Fitch rates have been downgraded and the lion's share of the insurance groups Fitch rates are either negative or on rating on one's guard for.

Moving the industry back to stable, she said, would require self-reliance that the financial crisis has past and that there is no new impact to insurers earnings. She said this study implies that some insurers’ ratings will need to move to refusing before an overall stable rating is given.

James B. Auden, managing skipper of insurance for the p&c sector, said the industry is solidly entrenched in a sissy market cycle and that this could be a prolonged cycle, but it may not be as severe as whilom cycles.

He said Fitch projects that for 2010 the activity will see a combined ratio of 104, with modest gains in net profits. Mr. Auden noted that in order for the industry to return to underwriting profitability it will need to documentation a combined ratio of 95.
